This past winter was really hard on our beloved hydrangeas on Cape
Cod. I'm hearing reports from everyone about seeing nothing but sticks on shrubs which are by now are usually covered with
lush foliage and lots of buds. A group of us are trying to assess the damage Cape-wide to find out if there are any varieties
that did well despite the awful weather, and which varieties were killed off completely. Most of us see growth only down at
the base. These hydrangeas will recover, but we expect no flowers this summer. I'd be interested to learn what happened in
your garden. What made it and what didn't? If you know the name of your hydrangea (e.g., 'Endless Summer', 'Merritt's Supreme',
'Ayesha'), please let me know if you have flowers this summer and what town you live in. Thanks!

Boston Flower Show
12:04 pm edt
Last weekend I spoke at the Boston Flower Show on the topic "Heavenly Hydrangeas
for the Home Garden". The audience of about 150 people was terrific with many good questions asked after the presentation.
As always I loved being at a flower show especially being inside with colorful flowers on a very cold day in March.

My Latest Hydrangea Book
I am VERY happy to report my latest hydrangea book is about to be released!
Heavenly Hydrangeas: A Practical Guide for the Home Gardener is the book I wanted to find over 20 years ago when
I first became interested in learning everything about hydrangeas. This is a combination of how-to book and photo essays.
All the basics are in the book: color; pruning; choosing the right plants; planting and transplanting advice; drying, hydrangeas
as cut flowers; how to make a hydrangea wreath, etc. I did everything I could to make this book helpful for the home gardener.
Each chapter deals with a single topic (like flower color). The text is supplemented with photos throughout. There is an index,
a list of places to see great collections of hydrangeas, and an appendix with frequenly asked questions. So, if you want to
learn more about hydrangeas, I think you need this book. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The mopheads are fading into their
beautiful antique colors but, oh! the paniculatas are really making their presence felt! I was driving along Route 6A in Brewster
yesterday and had to stop to take pictures of a fabulous display of 'Limelight' paniculatas edging the parking lot of the
She Sells shop. Check out my page on paniculatas and you'll see why I just HAD to stop!
